For week four of Fall 2016 One Room Challenge post, I decided to focus on my mid-century modern console makeover. You may remember seeing it this past Spring during my One Room Challenge reveal. Coincidentally, the day I revealed my “new” rental home family room was the day I found out that there would be a 95% chance that we would be moving. Crazy, right?…that is what I thought. During this moving process I gave away, yes, you heard right…I GAVE AWAY more than half of my furniture. According to my madre and the movers, I had WAY too much stuff. You are welcome to all the thrift stores I donated to and those of you in the RDU who are apart of the free cycle community…You are welcome! Let me not forget the misters co-workers who walked away with some of the most valuable assets that I own. Thank y’all so much for helping us with our move and always supporting us and running some of my craigslist errands for me. Y’all are awesome!

One of the many dressers, consoles, drawer sets, etc… that I kept was my MCM console that I got for free from a photographer. Crazy thing about furniture hunting, I remember the journey it took to obtain the piece, history and all.  Okay, back to the MCM piece….like most of my furniture pieces I obtained in NC, it was free (I am a ninja when it came to finding treasure in NC—I tell ya, I was golden! I cannot say that now) and was on craigslist for a couple of weeks before I noticed that it was available. It was not posted in the free section nor did it say free in the title, so I think that is why it took a while for someone to notice it. It is made of laminate and although there was nothing wrong with the piece, I felt that it needed some updating so I took it upon myself to reach out to my gal, Kellie from Design Asylum aka the gal behind the paint brand, Velvet Finishes.

To be quite honest, I knew about her paint brand for a while and it was only when I met her at Haven, that I actually took her up on her offer. I am so happy I did, because this paint has changed the painting game. Trust me, I am not just saying that because she is my friend…I am saying it because it is true. Normally when I paint something, I panic and I take forever to even begin the project because I hate painting. I absolutely, positively hate it. No matter how careful I am or what supplies I use, I always have to correct something or it does not turn out right. Painting furniture is one of those things that I normally do to really beat up furniture, nothing like this because of my painting anxiety. I decided to take a chance and it has totally paid off, the finish on my console is literally like velvet if it came in a paint can. This was the easiest paint job that I have EVER done on any piece of furniture and I am a huge fan! No lie!!!

What is the difference between Velvet Finish paint and regular paint?

1. You can thin out velvet finishes and still achieve your desired look.
2. You do not have to prime, sand, or seal velvet finishes*
3. No streaks, no problem
4. The curing time is literally when it dries
5. The end look has a smooth, luxe, velvet-esque finish

*sealing is optional, but is recommended on high traffic pieces

Let me not forget to mention, I switched out the legs of my piece and spray painted the handles. I took the legs off of a MCM bench that I already had. I was sweating it though…I did not want to spend more moola in this room than I had originally planned. The new legs stand taller by an inch or so than the previous legs. I was a bit hesitant because our main seating area is a daybed and I thought it sat lower than a couch. Fortunately, luck was on my side and it all worked out well.

I love the look of my new piece and I whole-heartedly believe that no other paint brand could have given me this desired look. I love my new to me console and this piece definitely makes the room.
