Oh.My.Wow! I feel like yesterday was just Halloween and tomorrow is like Christmas. The Christmas season is definitely upon us and what better way to be prepared for all the holiday entertaining than to read my post on how to create the perfect holiday party setting. Now, I am not the queen of entertaining, but I do know how to decorate for it, thanks to my mom. Throughout my childhood and up until now, my mother has had a little event planning side job. She used to recruit my sister and I to help with centerpieces and other decorative pieces used for the event. In other wards, I get my talent from my momma! LOL.
I can talk a lot about decorating and what I think you should or should not do, but today my main focus in on holiday entertaining with kids in mind. For those of you who are new to my blog, I am a wife and mother. I have three young kids so whenever we have events at our house, we ALWAYS have to keep the kids in mind. I can tell you this for sure, as long as there are kids around to play with, your kids will be occupied. What I am going to say next will shock you, kid friendly holiday decorating can also work for those who do not have kids. I believe the perfect setting is one that can be versatile.
Tips to creating the PERFECT holiday party setting
- Food is KING for any holiday party. Have you ever been invited to a gathering and you show up and there isn’t any food…just drinks (sometimes not even that)? I have and it sucks! I have even been to weddings like this. I know…right? One tip I have learned from my mother, is to never show up empty-handed. I know for my family, when we are invited to an activity we always try to bring some type of dish, dessert, or snack, just in case something goes array. With that said, if you are the one hosting the gathering, make sure that you make it a point to have food there, even if it is just snacks. Food always brings people together and it makes them happy.
- Make sure your dishware is on point. One thing that I love to do is shop at thrift store and estate sales for dishes. When I host gatherings I like to take them out and let them party a bit. If you are a collector of dishes like I am, you probably make it a point to use them whenever you have the chance. If you are not keen on using real dishware or China, but you still want more than just your red cups and styrofoam plates, purchase plastic cups and plates that look fancy. Target, World Market, and Home Goods sell them around the holidays. Side-note: If you love to entertain you may want to take advantage of the after holiday sales and stock up on plastic dishware.
- Keep it cool. My husband and I do not drink alcohol but we love to keep a nice stock of carbonated sparkling soda for family celebrations and get-togethers. Since moving, we discovered that our water source is not good and have been advised that water filtration through the refrigerator will not be a good alternative as a source for drinking water or ice. Keeping that in mind, we were stocking our fridge with drinks just so that they could stay cold. Thanks to NewAir®, they were kind enough to send me a beverage cooler. Since receiving a NewAir® beverage cooler, I have been keeping a stock of drinks in there to chill. I realized that this is the perfect addition to setting the tempo for any holiday gathering. Your drinks and snacks can be centrally located, no awkward houseguest is going in and out of your refrigerator for drinks, and it can be easily decorated to fit the theme that you have going on. This unit can either be built-in or free-standing. If you choose to use this free-standing, you can always use it predominately for entertaining purposes, it is totally up to you.
